Choosing the right filter: a quick guide to MERV ratings
Not all HVAC filters are equal. The key number to know is the MERV rating — Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value — which measures how effectively a filter captures particles from the air passing through it.
Higher MERV ratings capture smaller particles but can also restrict airflow in systems not designed for them. Here is a practical guide for most homes:
MERV 1–4 are basic fiberglass filters. They protect the HVAC equipment from large debris but do very little for air quality. These are the cheapest option and the least effective for health and cleanliness.
MERV 5–8 are standard pleated filters that capture dust, mold spores, and pet dander. These are the right choice for most homes without specific air quality concerns, and they are what most HVAC manufacturers recommend.
MERV 9–12 capture finer particles including fine dust, lead particles, and some bacteria. A good upgrade for homes with allergy sufferers or high dust environments.
MERV 13 filters — which Filter King offers — capture smoke, bacteria, and many virus carriers. These are the same level used in hospitals and are a strong choice for homes with respiratory concerns, significant pet presence, or anyone who wants the cleanest air possible. The tradeoff is slightly more airflow resistance, so confirm your system can handle MERV 13 before switching.
